At last, i found the right post on the eee pc user forum. The sound on my eee pc has faded away to almost nothing a couple of times. I went back to factory settings the first time, but second time around, just put up with it. It shouldn't break like this, but at least now I know to "sudo alsaconf" and accept defaults.
